RIVERSIDE, CA — August 15, 2008 — Next week, San Jacinto and Hemet residents will benefit from expanded service on two popular bus routes.
Service enhancements on routes 32 and 42 will take effect on August 18, offering extra stops and expanded service to schools, growing communities, retail outlets and other popular destinations. A ceremony to commemorate the expanded service on routes 32 and 42 will be held at San Jacinto High School on September 5 at 6:45 a.m.
Route 32, which connects Mt. San Jacinto College to the Hemet Valley Mall, will be expanded to serve two additional neighborhoods as well as North Mountain and Monte Vista middle schools and San Jacinto High School. Route 42's expanded service will travel from Soboba Casino to new communities near Cottonwood and Kirby avenues, and to the Hemet Valley Mall where passengers can connect with six other RTA routes. Route 42 will also serve Monte Vista Middle School and San Jacinto High School.
“The expanded service will expose a whole new group of people to the benefits of public transportation,” said San Jacinto Mayor Jim Ayres, who is also a member of the RTA Board of Directors. “In addition, it will bene•t students who can count on RTA to get them to and from school.”
The improvements not only provide students with a cost-effective alternative to school bus service, they also make RTA’s services available to more people in more communities.
“With gas prices as high as they are, there’s never been a better time to ride the bus,” said Hemet Councilmember Eric McBride, who also sits on the RTA Board of Directors. “These expansions will enhance our community and make travel easier than ever before.”
The expanded service on routes 32 and 42 is just the beginning of upgrades coming to San Jacinto and Hemet. In January, RTA plans to launch two new express routes in the area --- CommuterLink routes 212 and 214 --- with limited-stop service to Escondido and Riverside. Those buses will be equipped with free wireless Internet and satellite television.
“A growing number of commuters are sending a clear message that they want a convenient, affordable and reliable way to get to work,” RTA Chairman Karen Spiegel. “This service expansion aims to deliver just that.”
The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 39 fixed routes, 7 commuter routes and 15 demand response services. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second largest in the nation.
