Money approved for county public transit
The Riverside County Transportation Commission approved what one official said was the "most significant investment in public transit" the county has ever seen during its Wednesday meeting.
Without discussion, commissioners approved distributing more than $7 million in federal money the county was given to expand transit service so elderly and low-income residents are better served.
Sixteen agencies in Western Riverside County will receive money. More than $2.7 million will go to the Riverside Transit Agency to expand operating hours for some bus routes and add two additional routes connecting commuters to Metrolink stations.
Commission Deputy Director John Standiford said the federal money, administered by the county represented the biggest infusion of money to expand public transit in the county's history.
