RIVERSIDE, CA — October 17, 2005

Students to Benefit from RTA’s Upgraded Service

Southwest County students can look forward to more transportation options this fall when the Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) launches extra buses on two busy routes.

Due to an increased demand for service on routes that include stops at Temecula Valley High School and Murrieta Valley High School, RTA will provide extra service on routes 23 and 24 during peak periods. Each bus is capable of carrying 24 passengers, and will follow a short distance behind the established buses on those routes.

“RTA is working hard to meet the needs of all its passengers, including students,” said RTA Chair Jim Ayres. “Students can expect improved service on these routes, and a commitment from RTA to provide safe, convenient and inexpensive transportation between home and school.”

The beefed-up service, which begins Monday, October 17, will provide extra seats to all passengers, including students who choose to take public transportation to get to class. The extra service is part of a pilot program, which will be re-evaluated after a 30-day period.

Murrieta Valley High School students will benefit from a Route 23 bus, which starts at the Community Center near Old Town Temecula, and ends at the Murrieta campus. The extra morning bus begins at the Community Center at 6:01, one minute after the established route departs. The extra afternoon bus departs Murrieta Valley High School at 2:48, four minutes after the established route, and ends at the Community Center.

Temecula Valley High School students can expect more northbound service during their morning trips to class aboard Route 24. That service will start near Vail Ranch and follow the existing Route 24 bus by one minute, ending at the Temecula high school.

The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 38 fi xed routes, 5 commuter routes and 15 demand response services. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second-largest in the nation.
